In what ways is the collective memory of a society formed by health crises, population displacements, and economic recession? The collective volume Greece, Europe and Institutions During the Interwar Era: Refugee Settlement, Economic Crisis and Rationalization of the State examines the economic, social, and institutional transformations that shaped interwar Greece within a broader international context. Starting from the demographic and geopolitical upheavals caused by World War I and the Great Depression, the volume explores the top-down project of modernizing the Greek state, as well as the actors involved in these reform policies. A central methodological principle running through the volume is the examination of the multifaceted models of social development and economic growth applied in the country. Through a multipolar and multilevel structure, this approach highlights specific dimensions of cultural identities, shedding new light on their formation and evolution.

This volume investigates the repercussions of the international economic crisis of 1929 on the Greek economy and society during the interwar period through a range of visual representations and documentary sources.
Its analysis initially focuses on the principal agricultural commodities underpinning the Greek rural economy—tobacco, currants, and cereals—examining both cinematographic and photographic documentation of the production process, as well as photographic reportage of the major tobacco workers’ strike in Kavala in 1933. Particular attention is also devoted to photographic material published in the Athenian press in connection with the major mobilizations of currant producers in the Peloponnese during the 1930s and the violent workers’ strike in Kalamata.
Drawing on photographic material preserved in a variety of historical archives, the volume seeks to reconstruct, through visual evidence, aspects of everyday life in rural regions—including Crete, Imathia, and Rhodope—as well as in urban centers such as Kalamata and Athens, within the broader context of electrification and technological modernization.
Finally, the volume brings to light relatively understudied works of visual art from the interwar period, including those of Giorgos Valtadoros and artists associated with the periodical Neoi Protoporoi. These works are examined in relation to, and in dialogue with, the broader corpus of visual and documentary evidence presented throughout the volume.

This edited volume examines the historical formation and transformation of the global monetary order. Published by Alfeios Editions as part of the History and Historical Theory series, the volume brings together contributions -based on archival research- in economic and international history.
The volume explores the processes underlying the formation of the global monetary order, with particular emphasis on the interwar period. It examines the development of market mechanisms and their interaction with international, regional, and local institutions, highlighting the complex interplay between global economic dynamics and locally embedded political responses.
Attention is devoted to the ways in which local and international processes intersected in the formulation and restructuring of economic policies under the pressures generated by the Great Depression. The volume subsequently extends its analysis to the evolution of international monetary mechanisms in the period following the Second World War, thereby situating the interwar transformations within a broader history of global monetary governance.
The contributions collectively investigate the relationship between local actors—acting as policymakers at national and regional levels—and international economic institutions. By examining these interactions, the volume sheds light on the processes through which financial and monetary frameworks were constructed, negotiated, and transformed across different levels of governance. In doing so, it contributes to a historically grounded understanding of the emergence of global monetary structures and the mechanisms of financial “engineering” that accompanied their development.
