Rural Economy

The Creation of a Data Series of the  Greek Agricultural Economy 1928-1940

One of the aims of the present study is to comprehensively capture the size of the primary sector and its changes during the Recession, to the extent that Greece remained a predominantly rural country during the interwar period.

The main research question focuses on the interwar agricultural economy, thus the collection of quantitative data and the recording of productive activity achieved the centralised  recording of its data in such a way that it is possible to reflect the total and by type of production and its evolution over time. This reflection resulted in a rich series of data and indicators on agricultural production that show the volume and value of production as a whole and by product, the cultivated areas and acre yields, the evolution of agricultural production and the import of agricultural products, the product prices on the local market, the quantities of wheat concentrated, the value of imported cereals and legumes and the quantities in total and by country, the production and export of the main export agricultural products such as oil and olives, raisins and other viticultural products; import of vegetable products, production of agricultural products for industrial processing, the balance of foreign trade of agricultural products and arboriculture production in quantity and in value (in drachmas). The valuation of the livestock production was achieved by collecting data, such as the value of the livestock production and the relevant indicators of the livestock and livestock products, but also the relevant indicators and the estimation of the import of livestock products and the relevant import indices in quantities and by value.

We accomplished the creation of a digital database, which in a comprehensive way demonstrates the total agricultural production both in real terms and in comparison, with other countries. Parts of the primary production sector, such as fisheries, were not included in the priorities of the study to the extent that even the simple recording of their data is missing.
