This lecture deals with the economic and social processes in Germany in the 1930s, which were marked by the Great Depression. Mass unemployment, company collapses in the real economy and the banking sector, initially determined living conditions before the domestic economy experienced a revival in the mid-1930s. However, in the meantime, the Weimar Republic had failed.
The presentation covers three levels: In addition to the national level, developments at the state level (Kurhessen) and local level (city of Kassel) are unfolded. Furthermore, the debate initiated by Isabel Schnabel in 2004 (The German Twin Crisis of 1931) on the cause and effect relationship between the currency and banking crisis and its implications for the assessment of the economic policy of the Weimar Republic.
